Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

CBT is a therapy technique where we work together as you are the expert on your life and I am the expert on how to change. Through our discussion of specific thoughts and behaviors that you currently have, we look for thinking errors or cognitive distortions that may be leading to unhealthy emotions and negative feelings. As thoughts and behaviors change, you will then see feelings and emotions improve.

One example of a thinking error is all or nothing thinking. If you find yourself going to extremes or thinking “black and white” thoughts, you may notice that just as your thoughts go to extremes, your feelings become exaggerated as well. This leads to an incorrect response to a real stressor. This leads to feeling very angry when the appropriate response would be mild irritation. Now knowing that the trigger only deserved a smaller response, your thoughts adjust and respond appropriately.
